Vital Truths for Business Leadership #1

I often use my '5 Vital Truths for Business Leadership' as a guiding framework when working on leadership development initiatives. Here, we’ll begin with the first of these truths, with the others to follow in subsequent newsletters. 

Vital Truth #1: Leadership Has a Purpose 

Leaders exist to provide direction, alignment, and commitment within their organization to support the achievement of results - both strategically and operationally. But let’s ask a fundamental question: 

Why is leadership important for the business? 

At first, this might seem obvious. Yet, when I pose this question to leaders across an organization, the answers often vary. Many assume that leadership's importance is a given, something that HR or People and Capability drives. 

However, the Executive Leadership Team is responsible for ensuring that leadership and development efforts are truly fit for purpose. 

As Professor Dave Ulrich of the University of Michigan wisely put it: 

“Leaders create organizations that turn strategic aspirations into sustained results.”
