Beyond Growth: The Four Personal Outcomes for Business Leaders

“Most entrepreneurs don’t want more work — they want better outcomes.”
During the summer break, I take the opportunity to reflect on the past year and the outcomes I would like to achieve in the year ahead. This often takes place on our garden wall overlooking the estuary – my contemplative place. I am usually joined by my yappy schnauzer – especially when I have food!
I have found when working with the founders and leaders of established SMEs that their reflections eventually move beyond strategy, structure, or systems to the personal outcomes they desire.
It raises a more profound question for both me and others:
“What do I actually want from this business?”
This is why in our Leadership Practices Framework we aim to clarify the personal outcomes that sit at the heart of effective business leadership:
- Choice
- Fulfillment
- Impact
- Prosperity
These are not just abstract ideals - they are the fundamental reasons why most entrepreneurs start and continue in business.
The importance of these four personal outcomes can vary across individuals and change at different stages of life.
As Taki Moore often reminds us, leaders are time-poor. They don’t want more theory — they want something that helps them solve their immediate challenges.
So, here’s a short self-reflection check you can complete in under two minutes.
