The Leadership Arena
A program to optimize your leadership practices
In this program we help professional service business owners who struggle to build collaborative high-achieving teams, to develop capability and confidence in their leadership skills.

If any of the following apply to you as a Business Leader, you are NOT ALONE.
Are you:
β Struggling to explain the big picture, or the details (OR both) of how your business fits together?
β Unclear on your strategic priorities and expected outcomes?
β Spending too much time working in the business rather than on your business so that you feel like you don’t have enough head-space to think clearly?
β Seeing untapped business and improvement opportunities, and don’t’ know where to start?
β Spending time working on tasks that others should be doing?
β Frustrated by a lack of shared language and understanding with your team/s?
β Working without clear and consistent processes?
β Finding you have insufficient time to draft policies/procedures to meet legislative requirements?
β Lacking the full involvement and struggling to get the potential out of your people?
β Feeling that your work-life is not integrated or harmonious?
β Missing out on key family events due to work?
β Hoping to make a more positive impact within your business and the community.
β Lacking confidence in your leadership skills and sometimes feel you have the Imposter Syndrome?
The above challenges apply to many successful Business Leaders.
An antidote to these situations is to become a more effective by optimizing your Leadership practices – though this is easier said than done!!
We may want to improve our leadership impact, however, many Business Leaders do not know where to begin with their own development!
Why is effective Business Leadership important?
The purpose of effective Business Leadership is to create an environment where people can do their best work so that the strategic priorities and outcomes can be achieved for the business, and you can achieve your highest aspirations.
If you would like to see changes happen in the business and your personal life then -
‘You must be the change you want to see’ Mahatma Gandhi.
Your leadership, thinking and behaviours affect the way others behave, how your teams collaborate, the culture within your business, and in turn, these impact your customers’ experience.
How do you become a more effective Business Leader?
Enhancing your leadership capabilities and skills does not happen overnight, or by attending a short leadership development programme – although that can be a great kickstart!
Becoming a more effective leader starts with self-awareness and an intention to think and behave differently.
This takes time and requires guidance and coaching, as we cannot be objective about ourselves.
Did you know: Only a third of us have an accurate perception of how others see our behaviours and our intentions (Human Synergistics)?
Becoming a more effective leaders also takes persistence and effort to develop the right practices.
Optimize your Leadership Practices along with your personal life.
What are the right practices to develop for effective Business Leadership?
As a Business Leader you can make a positive impact at many levels. Each of us is unique in terms of our combination of personality, values, capabilities, and experience.
Your technical expertise, along with the knowledge of your business and it’s context, has taken time to gain. Likewise, it has taken time to gain knowledge and experience of leadership and leadership development.
To understand how best to leverage our strengths and enhance our individual practice so that we bring our best self to our business, our employees and family, takes effort and persistence. For many, the support of an objective perspective can make a big difference.
In the Leadership Arena program, we partner with you to provide an integrated and practical approach to guide and support you to grow your leadership impact in your business.
At Small Changes, Big Impact we use five broad leadership domains and fifteen essential leadership practices to form our Leadership Practices Framework (LPF). Our Leadership Practices Framework is a blueprint that:
• Helps to create a shared vision and clarity about what leadership looks like in your business
• Creates an integrated system to enable performance to agreed actions and behaviours
• Guides the development of leadership capability for you and the employees.

What drives my passion for leadership development?
The term ‘leadership’ is often reserved for large industry CEOs and political figures. Yet if you look at countries across the globe, small to medium enterprises are the backbone of industry and have adapted and thrived in this constantly changing business world. They haven't got to where they are today without some strong leadership practices in place!
Coaching and working in many organisations, I have witnessed the benefits of effective leadership and that of leadership development.
Our leadership practices and capability impact our key business metrics!
In 2017 Development Dimensions International (DDI) did an analysis of longitudinal data from a leadership development program involving more than 18,000 leaders and 12,000 managers, peers and direct reports of leaders.
This study showed that leadership development had a substantial increase on sales; customer satisfaction; productivity, operational efficiency and work quality.
In addition, the DDI study showed that leadership development decreased absenteeism, staff turnover, rework, overtime, accidents and grievances.
Business leaders that employ less than 300 hundred staff comprise over 90% of businesses in most countries. This is where we could enhance leadership practices – at the entrepreneurial level.
Every business owner should also be a business leader. Any improvement that is made at the micro-level of our economies will have a multiplier effect at the macro-level.
Individually and collectively, we can make a difference to our work-life, the lives of others and minimize our negative impact on the environment. We can be more intentional about the legacy we want to leave through our leadership and business practices.
What have some people said about Melanie and her work?
“Melanie is a highly experienced facilitator and coach. A visionary leader with the skills and experience to enable
strategic alignment through to supporting leaders with the plan and approach to implement change effectively.”
Joanne Rinaldi, Client Services Director, Prosci-ANZ
“I was fortunate to do a leadership training course that Melanie organised and ran. The course spanned a year and included a residential component and then a number of single days focussed on leadership, leadership in the organisation I work and on values based leadership practices.
This was the best professional development I have done to date. The program was well thought through and included interaction with senior leaders in my organisation and from outside. Melanie was very skilled at challenging my own values and how they play out in the workplace but also very encouraging of me to find my own pathway forward with personal leadership.
Since doing the leadership program I have received a significant promotion (to Professor) and taken on a senior leadership role (Head of Department) and my ability to succeed in these areas has been significantly aided by my experience on the leadership training that Melanie facilitated.”
Maurice A Curtis, Professor of Neuroscience
Head of the Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging,
University of Auckland
“Completing a leadership course facilitated by Melanie not only helped me improve my own leadership skills, it helped me realise how to nurture leadership in others. Melanie’s knowledge and approach to leadership practice is inspiring, thought provoking and practical.”
Pat Bullen, Ph.D. Senior Lecturer
Faculty of Education & Social Work,
University of Auckland
